Today, 1 February 2011, marks the beginning of a new chapter for me in property investment.
By handing over to the buyer the last property in my porfolio, I can officially put a footstop to phase one of my property investment.
In fact, I have been offloading my properties (apart from my own residence) one by one over the past one year.
I am selling them not because I am so pessimistic about the Singapore property market. Nor do I forsee the fact that the market will slow down because of the government property cooling measures (the government has said countless times that it will take steps to cool down the market). Though deep down you know that the market is very unlikely to go up another 20% or 50% in the near future.
It’s been 8 years since I bought my 1st property. To me, it’s a rewarding journey, with lots of interesting experiences and invaluable lessons learned. Now it’s time I moved on and prepared myself for the next phase. Afterall, what’s the point of holding onto your trophies won 10 years ago, and keep repeating the same stories for the next 10 years?
In 15 or 30 years’ time, these properties will be very old. They will need major upgrade, or have already gone enbloc. It will be meaningless to tell my grandchild those few properties granny has once owned when they have long disappeared in the map of Singapore.
Nonetheless, my 1st attempt in building a small property portfolio does give me the taste of some financial success. I have managed to lock in some profits which are summarized in the table below:
The wonderful thing about properties is that you only have to put in 20% in your initial investment. So when the prices of properties increase, it simply multiply your capital.
I am very grateful to earn my 1st bucket of gold through properties. I enjoy passive income from rental when I am holding my properties. When I sell them, it gives me freedom from choices.
I can choose to be more relaxed in life. I no longer toil around for long hours in the office. I don’t miss my loved ones from a different continent in a different time zone like I used to be. I can take a break from work as long as I want to. Everyday I spend the time the way I like.
I hope one day you will enjoy the same freedom from your property investment.
Wish you and your family a prosperous Year of Rabbit! And may all your wishes come true in the new year!
Hey Property Soul,
Been awhile since I posted a comment (last in Nov ’10). Here’s wishing you and your family a blessed and prosperous New Year as well.
It’s amazing that you’ve accomplished so much in the amount of time you have. I wish you all the best too in your phase 2 and look forward to you sharing when you embark on your phase 2.
Cheers,
~K
